Getting ready for your recording session at Sonic Conscious.
It’s best to pool the cost of strings, drum heads, instrument setups etc into the recording
budget.
GUITARS
• New strings one day before session, tune up and play until the strings stay in tune. Big
strumming chords played loud that use all the strings are best. Wipe down and put in case.
Don’t pull on strings to try and stretch, just play.
BASS
• New strings 3-4 days before, play some everyday but be sure to wipe down strings after
playing and keep in case. Don’t pull on strings to try and stretch, just play.
BASS AND GUITARS
• New batteries if pickups are active.
• Ideally a professional set up before the session, but if that’s not possible we can usually
address intonation, buzzing etc at the studio, just takes time.
DRUMS
• Bring new top heads for toms and snares to the session, we’ll put them on here. OR put the
new heads on but don’t tighten them, we’ll tune them here. If you are putting on the heads
before the session, be sure to wipe bearing edge to clean, make sure nothing is inside of the
drum, tighten any nuts that are accessed inside the drum.
• If the bottom heads are over a year old, replace them too, same protocol as step #1.
• Kick Drum heads last a long time but use a flashlight to check both sides of the beater side
head to look for cracks, especially were the beater hits. If the head is indented or has cracks,
it should be replaced, same protocol as step #1. The outside head is fine unless it’s torn or
beat up.
• Make sure no pedals squeak, I use 3in1 oil. It also cleans so do this on paper towels as there
will be a mess.
VOCALS
• Consider getting some tea or spray that is blended for singers. Singers Saving Grace spray
or something similar. For tea, Traditional Medicinals Throat Coat, Yogi Tea Throat Comfort or
anything blended for singing or the throat. NOTE Try out whatever you get a few days before
the session to make sure you don’t have an allergy or something.
• Avoid alcohol the night before.
KEYBOARDS, HORNS, STRINGS
• Make sure your instruments are working properly. Bring replacement reeds, strings, etc.
Everyone get a good nights sleep, recording takes a lot of energy and focus. Bring snacks and
beverages. Consider bringing food for lunch, refrigerator and microwave here. Also have a nice
water filter here to use.
